Dorothy Andrews Kabis Internship

The Dorothy Andrews Kabis Memorial Internship honors the former president of the NFRW (1963-67) who later was appointed U.S. treasurer by President Richard Nixon. The internship gives female undergraduates the opportunity to spend part of the summer working at national headquarters in Alexandria, Va. It includes a small monetary allowance, roundtrip airfare to and from Washington, D.C., and housing in the D.C. metropolitan area.

Applicants must be at least a junior in college or a college student 21 years of age or older. They should have a general knowledge of government, a keen interest in politics, campaign experience, and sufficient clerical office skills that are adaptable to a busy office. Internship recipients may not reapply. WCRW would love to have a young lady from Wood County to apply for this wonderful opportunity. Membership Launch Luncheon 2012

Twenty-eight Wood County Republican members and Associate members, both current and new, gathered together at the Parkersburg Country Club today despite the ice and cold temperatures. The food was delicious and the atmosphere one of family and friends. President, Deidre' Lake, informed the members of the various "perks" to being a member of WCRW. Directories and membership brochures were available. Information on the Dorthy Andrews Kabis Memorial Internship was shared and candidates are being sought. Appication deadline is February 15. Volunteer Chair, Joan Lucas, was present and expressed her desire to receive ALL club members' volunteer hours monthly via email or phone. Homeland Security/Armed Forces Chair, Tiffany Gibson, shared project information in which the club donated flags and other patriotic items to the students at North Christian School to aid in their celebration of Veterans Day. The Honorable Del. Anna Border was our Guest Speaker. She gave an informative and creative, visual presentation on "How a Bill becomes a Law". Peggy Meriner won the door prize that was provided by Mary Ann Osborne.

Several Republican candidates for re-election were present at the luncheon: Senator Donna Boley, Senator David Nohe, Delegate Bill Anderson, Delegate Anna Border, Delegate Tom Azinger, Rich Shaffer, Wood County Assessor and Robin Waters, Wood County Magistrate. Republican candidates seeking election present were Fred Gillispie for House of Delegates (10th District) and Rachel Ferguson for Wood County Magistrate.

Wood County Republican Women are proud to have Gladys Lemley, President-West Virginia Federation of Republican Women and Mary Ann Osborne, Past-President, West Virginia Federation of Republican Women as members of our club.

About John

Judge John Yoder is running as a Republican for a 12 year term on the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals. There are 2 open seats on the Supreme Court in the 2012 election.

Judge Yoder is currently a Circuit Judge in the 23rd Judicial Circuit of West Virginia. He holds court in Jefferson, Berkeley, and Morgan Counties, and is the supervising judge in Morgan County. He has a very distinguished career, which includes service in all three branches of government as well as a career in the private sector.

After serving four years as a state circuit judge from 1976-1980, Judge Yoder was the only person selected in a national competition to serve at the United States Supreme Court as a Supreme Court Fellow in 1980. After his service as a Fellow, the Chief Justice of the United States hired him to work on his staff. President Reagan next appointed him to establish and run a new subdivision at the U.S. Department of Justice. After that, he was elected as and served as a West Virginia State Senator for eight years prior to getting elected as a Circuit Judge for the 23rd Judicial Circuit in 2008.

Judge Yoder has been a voice for judicial reform and positive change in the judicial system. He strongly believes in the rule of law and in upholding the fairness and integrity of the judicial system. He also seeks to break the stranglehold of the Charleston political establishment on the State Supreme Court, so that disenfranchised areas outside of Charleston have representation on the Supreme Court. Four justices are now from Charleston and one is from Huntington. The Charleston area only makes up 10% of the State’s population. Yoder believes the other 90% should receive fair representation on the Supreme Court.

Judge Yoder holds a B.A. degree with majors in government and economics from Chapman University, a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Kansas School of Law, and an M.B.A. at the University of Chicago. He is also a graduate of several programs at the National Judicial College and the National College of Juvenile Justice.

In 2010, Judge Yoder was the Republican Nominee for a 2 year unexpired term for the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals. In the general election, he was narrowly defeated by the incumbent, Justice Thomas McHugh, by a margin of 50.8% to 49.2%. Judge Yoder expanded only approximately $6,000 in the race compared to nearly $300,000 expanded by his opponent. Justice McHugh is not running for re-election in 2012, so he will not be running against an incumbent this year as he was in 2010.

J. Michael Teets is a lifelong resident of Lost River in Hardy County who will bring a mix of business and government experience to the West Virginia Department of Agriculture.

The 59-year-old Teets and his son, Matthew, are partners in Teets Farms, a venture Mike started in 1973 with just 27 head of cattle. The operation now includes more than 1,200 head of cattle, raises more than 250,000 turkeys annually and plants 300 acres of corn, 350 acres of hay and 35 acres of alfalfa.
While expanding the family farm, Teets helped organize the county’s Farm Preservation Board. He has served on the Hardy County Commission for 15 years and continues to work with local, state and federal leaders to improve the county's infrastructure and economy. He is treasurer of the Hardy County Rural Development Authority, a group he has been a member of for 21 years.
Teets and his wife, Joyce Godlove Teets, have two children, Dr. Tina Teets Keplinger, a veterinarian who owns and practices at Lost River Animal Hospital, and Matthew Teets, who works the farm with his father. Mike and Joyce also have five grandchildren and looking forward to number six in February. They attend Believers Victory Center.

Teets is a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and a member of several professional organizations, including the West Virginia Poultry Association, West Virginia Cattleman’s Association, West Virginia Farm Bureau, American Shorthorn Association, American Angus Association, West Virginia Forestry Association and the AF & AM Number 29 Lodge.

He graduated from Mathias High School in Hardy County and received an athletic scholarship (basketball, football and golf) from Kemper Military Academy in Booneville, Missouri. He graduated with honors from Kemper in business administration.

Allen H. Loughry II, holds four separate law degrees including an S.J.D. (Doctor of Juridical Science), from The American University, Washington College of Law; an LL.M. (Master of Laws in Criminology and Criminal Justice) from the University of London; an LL.M. Loughry, the author of Don't Buy Another Vote, I Won’t Pay for a Landslide, teaches at the University of Charleston and is running in the 2012 election as a Republican candidate for the West Virginia Supreme Court. Loughry currently serves as a lawyer to the West Virginia Supreme Court and resides with his wife, Kelly, and their son, Justus, in Charleston.

Items collected for the Bread Line - Caring For America Project

The Wood County Republican Women met at the Parkersburg Country Club today. The meeting began with a music video of the National Federation of Republican Women's new theme song. Thank you notes were read by the Secretary. Our club donated to a local Boy Scout troop to purchase popcorn for the troops. Membership Chair, Mary Ann Osborne, spoke to the WVFRW Bylaws revision that was not passed and how it would affect WCRW and all of the clubs in West Virginia. The State President will be sending correspondance to National with the result of our vote and explaining the rational behind it. Members who want a hard copy of the updated WVFRW Bylaws must notify Deidre' by December 1, 2011. Campaign Chair, Gladys Lemley, commented on the Campaign Management Workshop she participated in at the NFRW Biennial and it's timeliness with 2012 being an election year. Items were collected for the Bread Line by Caring for America Chair, Deborah Trippett. She spoke to the need that is met by these donations and the opportunity to volunteer your time as well as items on Tuesday mornings at 8:00 a.m at St. Paul's UM Church on Market Street. Members who attended were generous as usual. WCRW received the Silver Club Achievement Award and the club's certificate from the NFRW was shared with members present. The 2012 Calendar was given out as well.

As a follow-up to the WVFRW 39th Biennial, Deidre' Lake presented a powerpoint presentation of photos and information. Copies of NFRW Resolutions were passed out and discussed. Each club in West Virginia received as a gift, the DVD, "Give me Liberty." All WCRW members and their families are encouraged to view this 45 minute video. Contact Deidre to borrow it.

Gladys Lemley presented a power point on the NFRW 36th Biennial in Kansas City, MO. She verbally shared information about the various events: Gala, workshops, prayer breakfast, and guest speakers. Presidential candidates, Herman Cain, Rick Santorum, and Newt Gingrich spoke at the event. Newt passed out a copy of his "21st Century Contract with America." The West Virginia Federation of Republican Women 39th Biennial was hosted by the Pleasants County RW at the Comfort Suites, Mineral Wells, WV today. Among the highlights was WCRW members Gladys Lemley and Deborah Trippett being elected and installed as Officers for the WVFRW for the 2012-13 term and Deidre Lake as a Member-at-Large. Wood County had 8 ladies present. WCRW received awards from the National Federation of Republican Women: Silver Club Achievement Awared & Outstanding Website for the Week. Gladys Lemley attended the NFRW 36th Biennial in Kansas City, MO and will share about the experience at our November 5th meeting.

Linda Rabatin, Republican Women of the Year for WCRW was honored along with other local club's women from West Virginia. Linda is on the left pictured above. Parts of the WVFRW By-Laws were changed and 3 Resolutions were adopted. The fate of the Stubblefield Bowl was placed in the hands of an appointed committee headed up by WCRW member, Mary Ann Osborne, Past President WVFRW. Lady Ambassadors were honored which included WCRW member Gladys Lemley.

Linda Rabatin

Linda was born in Buckhannon, W. Va., a graduate of Buckhannon Upshur High school, attended West Virginia Wesleyan College, and is a lifelong Republican. Married to Leonard in 1961 and has resided in Williamstown since then. They are the parents of two sons and have 4 grandchildren.

She has served as poll worker in Wood County for many years. She has been a member of the Wood County Republican Women for several years, holding the office of treasurer. She has been on the Wood County Republican Executive committee for 12 years. Delegate to the W. Va. Republican Convention in 2008.
Linda is a member of the Williamstown First Presbyterian Church, currently serving as Deacon and is a member of the Worship and Visitation committees. She is the Social Action Coordinator of The Presbyterian Women of the Williamstown church. She is a volunteer for the Williamstown Food Pantry.

She enjoys bowling in the Fiesta League at Emerson Lanes, growing flowers and gardening, and is an avid Williamstown and W. V. U. football and basketball fan.

The Pleasants Co. RW will host the 39th Biennial Convention for the WVFRW in Mineral Wells, WV on October 29, 2011. The general session will begin at 9 a.m. at Comfort Suites Hotel located at the intersection of I-77 & Route 14, Exit 170. The WVFRW Executive Board members will meet on Friday, October 28 at 7 p.m. at the same location. The Federation would like to invite everyone to join us for dinner at 5:30 p.m. at the Cracker Barrell prior to the Executive Board meeting on Friday.

REGISTRATION - The registration fee is $35.00 per person. Make checks payable to Pleasants Co. RW and mail to: Betty Bailey, 2179 French Creek Road, St. Mary's, WV 26170. Registrations must be received by October 21, 2011.

FUNDRAISER - We are having a white elephant sale. Everyone is asked to bring something patriotic that you would like to donate for the fundraiser.

CONVENTION AGENDA - We will be electing officers for the 2012-13 term. We will address the Public Relations proposal on membership, vote on the proposed Bylaws submitted by the Bylaws Committee and acknowledge each local club's Woman of the Year.

The Statewide Special General Election for Governor of West Virginia will be held on Tuesday, October 4th from 6:30 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Early Voting for this special election is currently underway at the Judge Black Annex Conference Center, 315 Market Street, Parkersburg (across from the Blennerhassett Hotel) from Wednesday, September 21 - Saturday, October 1, 2011.

Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (Sept. 24 & Oct. 1)

There is also a county-wide levy on the ballot as well. Voting is a tremendous priviledge and should not be discarded or taken for granted.

Thanks to the efforts of Phyllis Morris, WCRW Literacy Chair, the Parkersburg & Wood County Library has 2 more books! The books were selected by the library from the Mamie Eisenhower Library Project list put out annually by the National Federation of Republican Women. WCRW partcipate in the worthy endeavor each year. "Rendezvous With Destiny" by Craig Shirley was donated in memory of Delegate Larry Border. His wife, Anna, was present for the dedication and pictured above with the book. The book selected from the Children's list was "Biography Ronald Reagan" by Michael Burgan. It was donated in memory of Carrie Reed. Phyllis Morris is pictured holding this book. Director, Brian Reitz, is shown above and received the gifts on behalf of the library. Each book contains a bookplate from the NFRW.

Literacy is a priority to the Wood County Republican Women and our loyalty to this project each year is evident. "Thank you" to our members, whose dues make it possible to purchase these books.

Caring For America Project 2011

As chair of the Caring for America Committee I had the opportunity to spend
a few hours at the St. Paul's United Methodist Church Bread Line. The mission assisted nearly 50 people the morning I was there and the numbers are increasing significantly. You are invited to volunteer in the line as well as donate items.

The Wood County Republican Women will be collecting items for the Bread Line at our
September 17th meeting. The items we are requesting are toilet paper and personal hygiene items like deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, feminine products, and soap. Toilet paper is a great luxury since it cannot be purchased with food stamps. Thank you for your help.

As the date for the expected special session on legislative redistricting draws closer, it looks like many state politicians are going to ignore the will of the public in order to protect their own political careers.

Many West Virginians have voiced public support for the adoption of single-member delegate districts - which provide equal representation for residents throughout the state, and give citizens more direct access to their local representatives.

Fortunately, we still have time to make sure our voices are heard. Make sure our local legislators know where you stand on the important issue of redistricting. Gladys Lemley, WCRW Campaign Chair & Deidre' Lake, President traveled to St. Marys along with people from Wirt, Wood, Tyler, Ritchie, and Pleasants County in an effort to meet with Bill Maloney, Republican Candidate for Governor. The evening began with a dinner and concluded with remarks from Mr. Maloney and a Question/Answer session too.

Please stay connected in order to receive information about how you can work on Mr. Maloney's Campaign as well as pick up literature, signs, etc. Gladys will be notifying members/associate members via email when these opportunities arise. If you have a preference (door to door, phone bank, etc.) please share this knowledge with her.

Congressman McKinley's Brown Bag Lunch

Congressman David McKinley arrived in Parkersburg for a Brown Bag Lunch with the people of this great city/county. This was an attempt to meet with those who can't attend in the evening or who work, but can come on their lunch hour. Thirty + people attended the gathering. The Congressman spoke several minutes about the environment in Washington and what he's doing to represent the 1st District. He spoke specifically about trying to focus on the Regulation Group so as to develop legislation to reign these groups in (EPA, etc.) He addressed Medicaid, Medicare, and Energy. Those present were given the opportunity to ask questions, which he answered. From his voting record these first 134 days, the Congressman is representing the people of Wood County well. CAMP LINCOLN 2011 Scholarship Opportunity

Each year the WCRW solicit a young lady from Wood County to apply for a scholarship to attend Camp Lincoln.

WHAT IS CAMP LINCOLN?
Camp Lincoln is designed to educate young West Virginians in the workings of our two-party system and to build leadership skills for the future. Campers will participate in a mock model congress where they will write, amend and debate bills. They will nominate candidates, develop platforms and participate in a
political process.

WHEN IS IT?
Camp begins on Sunday, July 10th with registration from 3:00 to 4:00 pm. Camp adjourns on Saturday, July 16th at 11:00 am.

WHAT IS THE WEEK LIKE?
Campers participate in athletic competitions, fun and games, spiritual development,
and a variety of seminars ranging from U.S. history and government through activism.

WHO CAN ATTEND?
Camp Lincoln is open to young leaders age 14-18 regardless of sex, race or handicap.

WHAT DOES IT COST TO ATTEND?
The cost for a week at Camp Lincoln --$250 per camper*

*WCRW will pay the $250 fee to attend. Transportation is the responsibility of the camper.

If interested, send a 1-page typed (double-spaced) essay explaining why you would like to atttend. Also include one written recommendation from someone who is not related to you AND a completed registration form found at "www.camplincolnwv.org"

WCRW travel to WVFRW Spring Board

Five members of the WCRW traveled to Oak Hill, located in the beautiful Fayette County, West Virginia for the West Virginia Federation of Republican Women Spring Board. The ladies of Fayette Co. RW were very hospitable and we had a pleasant experience. The total attendace for the gathering was up from previous years. The State is in the process of updating the By-laws. All Committee Chairs were presented. Delegates & Alternates to the National Federation of Republican Women's 36th Biennial Convention in Kansas City, Missouri were selected. Wood County's Gladys Lemley will be attending. If you are interested in attending and are a member is good-standing go to "www.nfrw.org/programs/convention" for more information and forms. Deborah Trippett, WCRW Caring For America Chair, presented a report regarding our club's community projects for 2011.

The Fall Board will be hosted by Pleasants County RW. It will be held at the Comfort Suites, Mineral Wells, so stay-tuned to get the date and plan to be there since it's in our own back yard!

Carmichael & Faircloth visit WCRW

The WCRW held a meeting today at the Parkersburg Country Club. The sunshine and beautiful view from the Garden Room made for a splendid gathering. The club is again seeking a young lady from Wood County to attend Camp Lincoln slated for July 10-16, 2011. The Conservative Leadership Camp is held annually at Camp Caesar located in Cowen, West Virginia. A letter from WCRW will be mailed Monday to the Young Republicans group at P.H.S. to share this annual opportunity. The club pays the $250 fee. Transportation is the responsibility of the camper. Committe Reports were given by Phyllis Morris (Literacy Chair) & Deidre' Lake (Club Achievement Chair & Newsletter/Website Chair). Deborah Trippett (Caring for America Chair) sent a report that was shared with the group. A follow-up to the WVFRW Spring Board was shared with the club by the President. The Fall Board will be hosted by Pleasants County RW. The date is undecided, but the location will be at the Comfort Suites, Mineral Wells, WVa. 2011 Handbooks were passed out to Members/Associate memebers present.

Candidates Mitch Carmichael & Larry Faircloth shared their ideas, plans and desire to serve the people of West Virginia as its next Governor. Both were very passionate and we are thankful they included WCRW as part of their agenda in this busy campaign season.

Be sure to vote! Early voting is until May 11th at the Judge Black Building across from the Blennerhassett Hotel on Market Street. Parking pass can be validated at the Poll Clerk's desk upon arrival. Primary Election is Saturday, May 14th from 6:30 a.m. - 7:30 p.m. "Thank you" to all our members who work the polls!

Our next meeting of the body will be Saturday, September 17th from 10:00 a.m. - Noon as usual. The location is TBA. Don't think we're taking a break though. We have many projects scheduled for the summer (Literacy, Caring For America, Golden Apple Luncheon, etc.).

Betty Ireland Visits

What a lovely day it was to meet, fellowship and conduct business for a few short hours! Sixteen members and associate members came out for the business of the WCRW. Peggy Ahlborn was installed as Secretary for the 2011-12 term. The club voted to donate to 4 NFRW Projects: Betty Rendel Scholarship, National Pathfinder Scholarship, Dorothy Kabis Internship & the Marion Martin Building Endowment Fund. These provide opportunities not only for Wood County applicants, but young ladies all over the United States. We are part of a family that extends beyond Wood County and West Virginia! We received reports from Membership Chair, Mary Ann Osborne and Legislative Chair, Jaime Kupfner. The donations for the food pantry were numerous as expected. The items will be donated to the Baptist Temple Food Pantry, Park Avenue, Parkersburg. "Thank you" for your generosity.

The WVFRW Spring Board will be on Friday/Saturday, April 29 & 30 in Oak Hill, WV. Fayette Co. RW will be the host. Stay tuned to this site for futher details.

Saturday, May 14th is the W.Va. Governor Primary Election. Be sure to vote early or on-time!

Betty Ireland, Candidate for West Virginia Governor, came and spent an hour with our group elaborating on the "3 planks of her platform." The time was also spent answering questions and having a discussion on various topics. It was also nice to meet her husband, Sam. Our next meeting is Saturday, March 12th from 10:00 a.m. until noon. We will gather in the Ft. Boreman Room of the Judge Black Building on Market Street across from the Blennerhassett Hotel. Our business will be conducted from 10-10:30 a.m., which will include donating to the NRFW Scholarships. We are also asking ALL who attend to bring a food item for a local Food Pantry. Items needed include but are not limited to: canned vegetables, mac and cheese, canned fruit, powdered milk, peanut butter and canned soup. Betty Ireland, Candidate for Governor will be with us to share her thoughts and ideas for West Virginia and how she will carry them out if elected. Please come out and listen so as to aid in your decision before the May Primary.

Members of the Wood County Republican Women traveled to our State Capital to join Republican Women from all over West Virginia for "Republican Women's Day at the Legislature." Women from Boone, Cabell, Fayette, Harrison, Kanawha, Lincoln, Monongalia, Pleasants, Putnam, Wirt, and Wood all decked out in Red Jackets flooded the Capital to make a striking presence obvious to all who were present. The new WVFRW President, Ronda Falk, was present to help conduct the day's events and connect with the ladies. Senator Donna Boley and her Secretary, Carolyn, were gracious hosts as they made arrangements for us to gather in the Governor's Conference Room, provided light refreshments, scheduled a group photo in the Senate Chamber, lunch in the Capital Cafeteria, a day full of Legislative updates from several Republican Delegates & Senators, and appearances by Gubernatorial Candidates or the Representatives.

The weather cooperated and the time of fellowship and networking was, as always, worth it! Those who attended were both encouraged and inspired as we strive to reach the same goals and objectives. It was definitely the place to be.

Oh What a Night!

An intimate gathering of folks dressed in black & white amidst soothing sounds of a piano in a lovely ballroom, indeed, a Celebration at the Parkersburg Country Club is always a good idea. The food was outstanding as were the remarks made by Mr. John Raese as he reflected on a great man, Ronald Reagan. Tonight we celebrated what would have been President Reagan's 100th birthday and committed ourselves to building on the great legacy he left Conservatives. Guests traveled from Morgantown, Huntington, Charleston, Bridgeport, St. Marys and of course, Parkersburg. WCRW thank all who attended and "Happy Birthday Mr. President!"

The WCRW are excited to celebrate what would have been Ronald Reagan's 100th birthday! It will be a "Black & White Night" in the Ballroom at the Parkersburg Country Club on Saturday, February 5, 2011. The evening will begin with a cash bar at 5:30 p.m. Dinner will follow at 6:00 p.m. We will be enjoying the Grand Dinner Buffet which will include carved Prime Rib. One of President Reagan's true admirers is John Raese, who will be sharing some of his vast knowledge of this great man. Seating is limited to the first 72 paid reservations only. We request attire that is black and or white for the evening. Reservations are $50/single or $90/couple. Dorothy Andrews Kabis Internship

This memorial Internship Program is named after former Natinal Federation of Republican Women President Dorothy Andrews Kabis, who served from 1963-1967 and was later appointed Treasurer of the United States by President Nixon. Each year the program offers three young women the opportunity to spend six weeks in our nation's capital working in the headquarters of the country's foremost women's partisan political organization.

Applicants must be U.S. Citizens in their junior year of college or college students age 21 or over, having completed high school, but not yet graduated from college. Applicants should have a general knowledge of government and keen interest in politics, including campaign experience and clerical office skills adaptable to a busy office.

The internship provides housing in the D.C. metropolitan area and round-trip airfare. A small monetary allowance is given.

A complete application must include the following:
-Official application orm, sections A-F fully complete
-Most recent college transcript
-One-page typed essay stating your interest in the Kabis Internship
-One-page typed description of a particular political, extracurricular, or
community activity that you have been involved in, including an account of your
personal contribution to the activity.
-Three letters of recommendation, including phone numbers of authors for follow-up
-Optional photograph.

The Wood County Republican Women have received a "Certificate of Participation" from the the National Federation of Republican Women Literacy Chair, Carol Alexander. Our club has supported the Barbara Bush Literacy Project in our local community for several years by donating books to the Parkersburg & Wood Co. Library. The books are selected by the local library from the Mamie Eisenhower List.

Support Our Troops Project & Meeting

The final 2010 meeting of the WCRW was held today at the Parkersburg & Wood Co. Public Library. Mary Ann Osborn, Nominating Committee member, presided over the Election of Officers. The following slate of Officers were elected for the 2011-12 term: President-Deidre' Lake, 1st Vice President-Deborah Trippett, 2nd Vice President-Beverly Lockhart, Secretary-Phyllis Morris and Treasurer-Becky Deem. Attendance was high and those who came brought items for our 2010 Support Our Troops Project. Our club brought items for care packages as well as money to pay the postage to ship these items and others. The care packages are being shipped to Sharana & Salerno, Afghanistan where our local troops are stationed. Troops receiving these items include the 1092nd ENG Battalion, the 101st Air Borne, and Company C, 2/104th General Support Aviation Battalion from Williamstown.

Rejeana Jackson was present on behalf of the Mid-Ohio Valley Veterans Museum to share with members the mission and several programs the Museum conducts. Some of those include: Docent & Docent Scholarship Program, Care Packages (see list of items needed 2 posts below), Stepping Stones of Honor (Brick memorial at City Park), Family Support Program, Model Building Classes (youth ages 8+), Medal Replacement (help Veterans apply for medals they never received), "Our Local Heroes" (a book featuring our local veterans to be published in the future). These are worthy programs and something EVERYONE can support. The WCRW once again teamed up with the Wood Co. Democrat Women to provide delicious food and drinks for anyone who desired some. The courthouse was not as busy as times past, but we were glad to be there all the same. "Thank you" to every member who donated food, drink and/or time to make this evening more enjoyable. The Repubican party picked up or maintained many seats and we expect all those who won to do their utmost for the people who elected them.

2010 Support Our Troops Project

On Saturday, November 6th, Gary Farris, Director of the Mid-Ohio Valley Veterans Museum will be with us to share with us the mission of their latest project and how we can help. You will be given the chance to donate money to ship the items. It costs $12.50 to ship each box. You can also bring that day some of the following items: 60 watt light bulbs, men’s shaving cream with a rubber tab in the bottom of the can, baby wipes, dental floss or picks, mouthwash, deodorant, small pump bottles of hair spray, beef jerky, sunflower seeds, Slim Jims, M&Ms, Skittles, nuts and chewing gum. These items will be sent to Sharana, Afghanistan, where Chaplain Joe Ward runs a store for soldiers to get what they need for free. The West Virginia National Guard 1092nd Engineer Battalion of Parkersburg is stationed there. We will be sending pocket flags to them as well.

We are so thankful for our troops & their families. This is just a small way to share that we care.

2010 WVFRW Fall Board

Tyler Co. Republican Women played host to the West Virginia Federation of Republican Women for the Fall Board on Saturday, October 16th in Sistersville, W.Va. The fall scene inside was as lovely as the drive up Route 2 to get there. There were 8 clubs represented. Wood County had 3 women attend. Lady Ambassadors were recognized with certificates and a pin from NFRW by Chair, Eva Kay Cardea. WVFRW Historian, Iva Danner, presented the WVFRW Scrapbook as well as a resolution regarding the Silver Punch Bowl formerly used to reward the club with the best scrapbook. Presidential reports were given by 8 club presidents: Fayette Co. RW, Gateway RW, Huntington-Cabel RW, Kanawha Co. RW, Pleasants Co. RW, Putnam Co. RW & Wood Co. RW. Guest Speaker was Melody Potter, WVREC Associate Chair. Lunch was served by the First Baptist Church ladies and it was delicious and home made. The Keynote speaker was Mike Stuart, WVREC Chairman. Each club was asked to bring a pumpkin that illustrated the theme - "Fall into the election and harvest the votes!" WCRW's pumpkin received 2nd place. The "Fire Pelosi & Reid Bus Tour" will be in Parkersburg on Tuesday, Oct. 19th at 2:00 p.m. at Victory HQ located on Grand Central Avenue by Ruby Tuesday. The WCRW met at the Parkersburg & Wood County Library today. The WCRW's participation in the NFRW's Voter Registration Drive produced 10 new registrations and 3 citizens took home registration forms. This was a great idea & will be repeated again next year. Blank forms were available for members to take and have on-hand to register friends/family. The U.S. Constituion was celebrated this past week. The President brought pocket versions for members to have. The club donated to 2 NFRW projects as well as accepted the 2011-12 slate of Officers presented by Nominating Committee Chair, Linda Rabatin. Our 2010 Literacy Project paperwork was submitted to National. Angela Summers, FairTax Community Coordinator gave a very informative presentation on the FairTax. A lively discussion on the topic followed the program. The WVFRW Fall Board meeting will be hosted by Tyler County Republican Women, on Saturday, October 16th at 8:00 a.m. Guest Speakers will be WV Republican Executive Committee Chair, Mike Stuart & WVREC Associate Chair, Melody Potter. The National Federation of Republican Women is conducting a nation-wide, Voter Registration Drive the week of September 13-18, 2010. This is an effort prior to the General Election to increase the number of people registered to vote as well as give those already registered the opportunity to change their party affiliation and or change their address if they have moved. Over 400 people gathered at Bicentennial Park on Wednesday, September 1st to show support for David McKinley as he strives to be elected to the House of Representatives, 1st Congressional District for the people of Wood County and surrounding counties in West Virginia. Guest speaker, Dick Morris, syndicated columnist, FOX News Commentator, author, and former senior presidential advisor to Bill Clinton flew in to support McKinley and express the need for all citizens to vote in the general election & to send conservatives McKinley and John Raese to Washington, D.C. John Raese briefly addressed the crowd in his bid to be elected to the Senate seat for the unexpired term of Senator Byrd. Both McKinley and Raese need your help in changing the direction of this country, which will help not only West Virginia, but all of the U.S. of America. May God continue to bless this nation.

The titles were donated in Honor of 2 of our members: "The Heritage Guide to the Constitution" in honor of Senator Frank Deem (1955-2010) and "Take the Lead, George Washington" from the list of Children's books in honor of Mary Ann Osborne, former President of the West Virginia Federation Republican Women (1994-97) & the Republican Women Service League (1986-88). The week of July 10-17 has afforded the WCRW several opportunities to show our support of the Republican Party of Wood County. Several of our members volunteered and showed up for the "Victory Headquarters Grand Opening" last Saturday. The HQ is located in front of the Grand Central Mall in the old "Wirefire" location. This HQ will be used for the next 109 days to help the Republican Candidates gain support and votes leading up to the General Election slated for November 2nd. Volunteers to make calls from there are needed. Contact Patrick Heavener at the HQ (304-699-5794) to sign up for work at the HQ.

The West Virginia Interstate Fair & Exposition is open from July 13-17 at the Wood County 4-H grounds on Butcher Bend Road, Mineral Wells. The Wood County Republican Party has a booth there to register voters, as well as have information available regarding our candidates to share with the public. GOP candidates also plan to be present at the booth throughout the week at various times. Members of our club have already worked the booth, but more are needed each day for the Noon-3 p.m. or 3:00-6:00 p.m. shifts. Contact Greg Smith to volunteer.

It might have been cloudy and raining outside, but there was a wonderful atmosphere inside as the WCRW hosted two of the six Wood County 2009-2010 Golden Apple Winners invited to lunch at Olive Garden. Janice Case, VanDevender Middle School and Dee Dee Gains, Williamstown Elementary attended along with Monica Davis (2008-2009 Winner) as well as the officers of the WCRW. It was a lovely time to visit and get to know one-another. The WCRW truly appreciate all that these ladies do each day and it was obvious why they were selected for the Golden Apple Award. The WCRW "thank" ALL educators in Wood County and hope they have a relaxing & refreshing summer!

The WCRW members & Associate members met on Saturday, May 22nd at the Parkersburg & Wood County Library Board Room. Those present were updated on the 2010 Patriotism Project with PSHS the last school to receive the booklets. Details of the 2010 Literacy Project were given by Chair, Phyllis Morris. The project will go forward as discussed & voted upon. A report was given on the WVFRW Spring Board in which 6 of our members attended. The WVFRW Fall Board will be October 15 & 16 in Sistersville. Tyler County RW will host the state-wide event. GOP Primary winners were invited to attend & share how WCRW could help them to build up to and win the General Election in November. Fred Gillespie spoke with the members as well as Mary Ann Osborn, Wood County Chair for David McKinley. Our Annual Golden Apple Luncheon will continue this year with our officers hosting the six 2009-2010 Wood County Golden Apple Recipients to lunch. This is one of our favorite things to do! We will take the summer off in regards to meetings, but we may get together to work on our 2010 Support our Troops Project. Mary Nowery had an idea for our Veterans & we are seeking community project ideas all year long. A Program on the "History of the "Republican Party" was given & a handout of the "Republican Principles" as well. If you were absent, the information was from the The RNC & NFRW websites. In an effort to keep costs down, 2010 Handbooks will be available at all meetings. The WCRW's 2010 Patriotism Project is one that benefits EVERY sophomore in Wood County. The WCRW with the help of Associate members, Rick Modesitt and Bob Tebay, purchased from the Heritage Foundation in Washington, DC, over 1,000 pocket "Declaration of Independence/United States Constitution" booklets to pass out to ALL 10th graders. The project was approved by Superintendent, Bill Niday. Wood County Schools Curriculum Coordinator, Mrs. Johnson, felt the history classes for 10th grade would benefit the most in receiving them. We are now in the process of giving these valuable booklets away. The photos above will continue to increase in number as we are successful at visiting the various schools. The following is the breakdown:

What seemed like a "quiet" night compared to other election nights, May 11, 2010 at the historic courthouse in downtown Parkersburg was still the place to be. Amid friends and those we consider "foes", the WCRW worked along side the WCDW to provide refreshments for any and all who wanted them. It is always a pleasant experience working with these ladies who are on the "other side of the isle" when it comes to politics, but we always work well together. Our tables of food and drink were well stocked and well received. Not pictured, but Chair of this event is Becky Deem, who coordinated all the refreshments, volunteers & arrived to set up for the evening. The results of the various races from the day didn't all go as we'd planned, but we will not give up or give in. We will continue to do what we can to get Republicans elected to local, state and national offices. Our sights are now set on the General Election, which is less than 6 months away!

The Wood County Republican Executive Committee hosted a Candidate Forum on Friday, April 30, 2010 at the Parkersburg City Building. All candidates that will appear on the Primary Ballot were invited to attend. Questions were posed to the candidates, whose answers were to benefit those of the public in attendance. The WCRW provided assistance at the refreshment table during this event. One of the WCRW's goals is to help Republicans get elected to local, state and national offices and events such as this are part of accomplishing that. "Thank you" to the ladies pictured above.

The WCRW had 6 members attend the WVFRW Spring Board held on Saturday, April 24th at the Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites in Barboursville, WV. The event was hosted by Huntington/Cabell Republican Women. A number of items for business were discussed as well as workshops on topics ranging from leadership to specific offices & their duties. The club is challenged to have at least 2 ladies become "Lady Ambassadors" of the WVFRW by the Fall Board. To become a lady ambassador, mail a $50 check payable to "WVFRW" to Gladys Lemley, WVFRW Treasurer,1106 6th Street, Vienna, WV 26105. Garden hats were created and judged with prizes awarded. Silent Auction items for the garden were present to help raise funds for the WVFRW. BETTY RENDEL SCHOLARSHIP

The NFRW established the Betty Rendel Scholarship Fund in September of 1995 in honor of NFRW Past President Betty Rendel's extraordinary leadership skills and dedication to the Republican Party in her home state of Indiana, as well as at the national level.

The three annual scholarships of $1,000 are designed for undergraduate students who are majoring in political science, government or economics. The recipients are chosen from applicants from across the nation. The scholarships are given to students who have successfully completed at least two years of college coursework. Scholarship winners may not reapply.

NATIONAL PATHFINDER SCHOLARSHIP

The NFRW established the National Pathfinder Scholarship Fund in 1985 in honor of First Lady Nancy Reagan.

The 3 annual scholarships of $2,500 each are available to provide financial assistance and support to young students seeking undergraduate or postgraduate degrees. College sophomores, juniors, and seniors, and students enrolled in a Master's Program are eligible. Recent high school graduates and first year college students are not eligible to apply for the scholarship. Scholarship winners may not reapply.

A complete application for EACH scholarship includes:
-Official application form completed in full.
-3 letters of recommendation, including phone # of authors for follow up.
-An official copy of your most recent college transcript.
-A 1-page typed essay stating the reason why the applican should be considered for the scholarship.
-A 1-page typed essay on career goals.
-Optional photgraph.
-State Federation President Certification.

ONLY COMPLETED APPLICATIONS WILL BE CONSIDERED.

Wood County was well represented at the annual "West Virginia Republican Women's Day at the Legislature" hosted by Senator Donna Boley at the State Capital in Charleston. The day began with a continental breakfast in the Governor's Press Conference Room. We attended the Senate Session and sat in the upper gallery. Senator Boley introduced the WVFRW delegation of 30 and we stood forming a wonderful "sea of red!" A photo was taken on the senate floor followed by lunch in the Capital Cafeteria. We were pleased that Congresswoman, Shelley Moore Capito stopped in for a visit. Five candidates running for Congress (Sarah Minear, Tom Stark & Mac Warner-1st District/Lee Bias & Marty Gearheart-3rd District) addressed our group as well as several of our elected officials: SENATORS Frank Deem-Wood, Mike Hall-Putnam & Dave Sypolt-Preston; DELEGATES Bill Anderson-Wood, Tim Armstead-Kanawha, Tom Azinger-Wood, Larry Border-Wood, Ray Canterbury-Greenbrier, Mitch Carmical-Jackson, John Ellem-Wood, Woody Ireland-Ritchie, Carol Miller-Cabel & Linda Sumner-Raleigh. A guided tour of the new WV Museum located in the Culture Center was available. Even though the threat of bad weather was looming, it was an exciting and encouraging day for the members of our club and for the GOP!

2010 Republican Women's Day @ Legislature

Monday, February 15, 2010 is Republican Women's Day at the Legislature at the State Capital in Charleston. Plan to arrive anywhere between 9:30 am. to 10:30 am. Remember to wear red or a red jacket on that day. Upon reaching the Capitol Building you should go to the Governor’s Conference Room on the 1st Floor beside the West Virginia Secretary of State’s Office (same as in past years). At the Governor’s Conference Room there will be light refreshments of coffee and pastries for you Ladies. At 10:45 a.m. Senator Donna Boley would like for all of the Ladies to come to the Senate (elevator near the Governor’s Conference Room) – to sit in the Senate Gallery for the Session and Recognition. Senator Donna Boley has arranged for Pam Powers Moore to perform at the Senate Session singing a couple of her songs. Those of you who attended the W.V.F.R.W. Board Meeting held in Upshur County heard Pam at that time. Ladies, so as to mark our experience at Republican Women’s Day At The Legislature, there is traditionally a group picture taken. This picture may be taken prior to going to the Senate and/or later. Those arrangements will be given at the initial meeting in the Governor’s Conference Room. Senator Boley has checked with the Capitol Cafeteria (which can be found in the basement of the Capitol Complex with access by elevator) it will be opened and they will be looking for our Ladies at 11:30 am to 11:45 a.m. Lunch will be “dutch treat”. Directly after Lunch the Ladies will return to the 1st Floor – Governor’s Conference Room. Senator Boley has a program for our Ladies which will involve candidates and elected Legislators (officials) to speak with us. We will also be touring the new exhibits at the Culture Center.

WCRW Give Pocket Flags to Local Troops

The WCRW folded 300 American Flags from the Pocket Flag Project last November. Once folded, these flags fit into a soldier's breast pocket over their heart. This project is dedicated to making sure every American Soldier that is serving on the front lines receive one of these flags. SFC Donald R. Sandy, a Parkersburg native, is a member of the 115th Engineer Company located in Clarksburg, WV. SFC Sandy, serving his second tour in Iraq, is home on a two-week leave. He humbly accepted 125 flags from WCRW President, Deidre' Lake, and is committed to giving one to each of the 115th when he returns later this week. The 115th ENG Co. is attached to the 779th ENG BN while in Iraq. The WCRW commend SFC Sandy and all our troops on their service to our country and their families who sacrifice so much. We pray they complete their mission and return home safely very soon.

Dorothy Andrews Kabis Internship

This Memorial Internsip Program is named after former National Federation of Republican Women President, Dorothy Andrews Kabis, who served from 1963-1967 and was later appointed Treasurer of the United States by President Nixon. Each year, the program offers three young women the opportunity to spend 6 weeks in our nation's capitol working in the headquarters of the country's foremost women's partisan political organizaion.

Applicants must be U.S. Citizens in their junior year of college or college student age 21 or over, having completed high school, but not yet graduated from college that has a general knowledge of government and a keen interest in politics, including campaign experience and clerical office skills adaptable to a busy office.

The internship provides housing in the DC metropolitan area and roundtrip airfare. A small monetary allowance is given.

A completed application includes an official application form fully completed, most recent college transcript, one-page typed essay stating your interest in the Kabis Intership, one-page typed description of a particular political, extracurricular, or community activity that you have been involved in, including an account of your personal contribution to the activity, 3 letters of recommendation, including phone # of authors for follow-up and a photograph is optional and MUST BE RECEIVED by Deidre' Lake, 1065 Winding Road, Parkersburg, WV 26104 BY FEBRUARY 15th. Only completed applications will be considered.

The internship winners will be chosen by the NFRW Executive Committee.

The WCRW held our membership luncheon at the Parkersburg Country Club where the atmosphere is always lovely and the food delicious. There were 35 in attendance including Mac Warner, running for the 1st Congressional District seat, Dr. Fred Gillespie and Eric Jiles, both running for Wood Co.'s 10th District of House of Representatives. The goal of achieveing 50 members & 20 Associate members for 2010 is off to a good start after today's event. Guest Speaker, Mike Stuart, was very inspiring and encouraging as he challenged those present to take advantage of the opportunity we have and to help lead our community, state and country in the right direction.

Membership Luncheon

WCRW invites members from the past and present to become members in 2010 by attending our luncheon on Saturday, January 23, 2010 from 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at the Parkersburg Country Club where we will enjoy the Deluxe Lunch Buffet and be inspired by our Guest Speaker, Mike Stuart from the WV Conservative Foundation out of Charleston. The cost is $20 for the lunch.

Membership dues continue to be $20/year even though the NFRW raised their dues. Dues are payable now and can be mailed to Phyllis Morris, 1540 Willoughby Drive, Parkersburg, WV. Associate Member dues remain at $10.

Pocket Flag Project

Five members of the WCRW gathered together to fold 300 American Flags sized especially to fit into a serviceman's pocket once folded. What a wonderful way to spend a few hours-doing something to support our troops. If you would like more information on this project, or belong to a group that would like to fold flags simply go to "http://www.PocketFlagProject.com" The WCRW's prayer is that those who receive these flags be blessed and reminded that there are people at home who are thinking of them, are thankful for them and are praying for them.

The men and women who serve this great country are a priority to the WCRW. Each year the club selects some way to help this group of fine individuals. This year's project is the "Pocket Flag Project." This project was selected from the NFRW's website. This Project has been around since October 2001. The objective is to get as many pocket flags as we can into the pockets of our military personnel on the front lines. These flags are not for sale or to be used for any other purpose.

WCRW have ordered 300 pocket flags and will meet on Saturday, November 7th from 10:00 a.m. - Noon in the Large Board Room of the Parkersburg & Wood Co. Public Library to fold them. Coffee/Hot Cocoa will be provided.

Each flag includes a card which says;"A flag for your pocket so you can always carry a little piece of home. We are praying for you and we are proud of you. Thank you for defending our Country and our freedom."

One of the WCRW's goals is to have a positive impact on our community. One way to do that is to provide opportunities that are open to the public to help inform and encourage the people of Wood County to take an active role in finding out about candidates, what they stand for and ultimately going out to vote for those candidates in the Primary/General elections. Saturday's event went very well. The total number that signed in was 20, which included WCRW members and members of the community. Those present asked questions that were important to them and went away with a better understanding of WHO Cindy Hall and Tom Stark are and WHAT they stand for. The Parkersburg Country Club was the setting for West Virginia Federation of Republican Women's 38th Biennial. Amidst real pumpkins, leaves and scarecrows, Republican women from all over the GREAT State of West Virginia gathered to network, share ideas, renew friendships and elect our state officers for the 2010-2011 term. All Club Presidents presented reports of their club's activities since the Spring Board in April 2009. Awards were given by current President, Betty Bailey (Pleasants County) to clubs being recognized at the National level. Those included Bronze Club Achievment status to Tyler Co. RW & our very own Wood Co. RW. Gold Club Achievment status to Putnam Co. RW. Certificates and pins were presented to their club Presidents. Membership Awards were given to Cabel-Huntington RW (runner-up) & 1st Place Kanawha Co. RW. WVFRW's Lady Ambassadors were recognized by President Bailey and each club's "Republican Woman of the Year" were also given special recognition.

The lunch buffet was delicious as usual. Our guest speaker for the day, Betty Ellison from Lexington, KY spoke on Mary Todd Lincoln. An accomplished journalist,she has been an editor and worked for numerous newspapers and magazines. She is the author of 4 books with 3 more in the works. As a member of the Kentucky Historical & Mansion Preservation Board, she has been involved with restoring "White Hall", home of Cassius Clay as well as the home of Mary Todd Lincoln. After spending 4 years reseaching the Todd and Lincoln families in both Kentucky and Illinois, she has become an expert on Mary Todd Lincoln. We were all surprised at the information she shared and were pleased to have the opportunity. We look forward to her book on Mary Todd Lincoln, due out sometime late 2010.

Members of the WCRW are always invited to this annual event, which was on Saturday, August 15, 2009. It takes place at Senator Donna Boley's camp site along the Ohio River in Friendly, WV. It happens rain or shine and the time spent is always good. The food and fellowship are hard to match and the scenery, just beautiful. This is the 4th year for the picnic and people from many different counties were there. This was a perfect time to discuss some of the policies and "changes" being proposed. There is great concern as to where our Country is presently headed under this administration. "Thank you" Senator Boley and your husband, Jack for hosting this wonderful event each year. Your time and effort are so appreciated.

The WCRW met on Saturday, August 8th at the Parkersburg & Wood Co. Library with 8 members attending & enjoying fresh fruit and fellowship. The 2009 Handbooks were passed out and now contain our updated By-laws. An update was given on the Literacy Project, in which the President wanted to show the book to those present, but she was happy to report that it was checked out! The volunteer opportunity, THE MISSION OF MERCY was shared, as well as a "thank you" for those who donated to the Bakeless Bakesale. We selected our 2009 WCRW Woman of the Year, she will be revealed and honored at the WVFRW Fall Board/38th Biennial held at the Parkersburg Country Club on Saturday, October 3rd. Let Deidre' know if you need a registration form ($40). An invitation to the 3rd Senatorial District Picnic was shared and members encouraged to attend on Saturday, August 15th from 5-8:00 p.m. Contact Bev if you plan to attend. All members are asked to volunteer at the GOP booth during the Parkersburg Homecoming. Please call Ed Long at 304-210-6448 to sign up. The highlight of the meeting was the Program on "Leadership" presented by member, Sherry Ellem (above) who shared information from "The Flight of the Buffalo" and used her skills to engage us in a leadership activity and time of discussion that made it all truly sink in and make sense. "Thank you" to Sherry for using her gifts to help us grow.

Our next regular meeting will be Saturday, October 24th from 10:00 a.m. to Noon at the Ft. Boreman Room in the Judge Black Building, Market Street. MISSION OF MERCY Free Dental Clinic

The WCRW continued to fulfill our desire to impact our community in a positive way by volunteering with the "Mid-Ohio Valley MISSION OF MERCY Free Dental Clinic". The 2-day clinic held on July 31 & August 1 at WVU-P from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m each day was a huge success. Roughly 1500 patients received dental care during the clinic. Four members registered, went through training and orientations to be part of an absolutely wonderful event! Their jobs varied from working with the Red Cross/hospitality, to logistics, to general flow. Members who participated included Deborah Trippett, Mary Nowery, Deidre' Lake and not pictured above, Mary Ann Osborne. To be a part of something that truly transforms someone's life is an awesome blessing.

The WCRW's continued interest in Literacy was put into action as we donated "LINCOLN A Life of Purpose and Power" by Richard Carwardine in honor of Senator Donna Boley today at the Parkersburg & Wood Co. Public Library in Parkersburg, West Virginia. Literacy Chairman, Phyllis Morris, is diligent in supporting this important area each year. This book was selected by the library from the Mamie Eisenhower Library Project List which is published each year by the NFRW. Phyllis is a member of the National Literacy Committee for the NFRW.

The WCRW were "out for blood" as we were very excited to plan & promote a Blood Drive to help our community. We had several members volunteer at the Keystone Donation Center today to support the Blood Drive. "Thank you" to members Phyllis Morris, Linda Rabatin, Deidre' Lake, Mary Nowery, Deborah Trippett, Kathy Smiri (WCREC), Bev Lockhart and Becky Deem (not pictured). "Congratulations" to Beth Deem, who won the $25 SpeedWay gift card and Ali Neff, who won the $25 Food Land (Emerson) gift card. Our goal was 40 pints and we fell very short of that. Much time could be spent speculating why, but we won't. We were successful in providing an opportunity to have a positive impact on the community and that sometimes is all that we can do. We are grateful to those who did donate, those who came but were unable to give, and those from the American Red Cross who have chosen this profession.

Another school year has come & gone and the WCRW continue to show our appreciation by inviting the three 2008-2009 Wood County Golden Apple Award recipients to lunch as our guests! Today, we were thrilled to meet Mrs. Monica Davis, 4th grade teacher at Franklin Elementary for lunch at the Olive Garden. Mrs. Davis has taught different grades & diciplines and was truly an inspiration to us. We wish her a wonderful summer break and again, "Congratulate" her along with, Mr. James Dennis (PSHS) & Mrs. Ashley Wiltsey (Neale Elem) for receiving this award. "Thank you" to ALL Wood County teachers for what you do and we wish you well.

CAMP LINCOLN 2009 Scholarship Opportunity

Camp Lincoln is a conservative youth leadership camp for teens, ages 14-18. The camp is located at Camp Caesar in Webster County and this year will be held July 5 - July 11. Every year amazing teens from across West Virginia gather in beautiful Webster County to experience Camp Lincoln. As soon as the campers arrive they are split into two parties, the Nationalists and the Federalists. The fun (and the learning) then begins . Throughout the week campers participate in a variety of activities including athletic events, games, a cookout, mock model congress sessions, a dance, prominent guest speakers, and so much more! Campers nominate candidates, develop platforms, debate, and ultimately learn the workings of our two-party system. Friendly competition, team spirit, and pride for our state and country are all cultivated at Camp Lincoln. The leadership skills that blossom from each and every camper by the end of the week are remarkable. Lifelong friendships are forged and the potential for tomorrow's leaders emerge. We are looking for some outstanding teenage leaders to attend Camp Lincoln 2009. The cost per camper is $250. WCRW want to help make it possible for Camp Lincoln to continue teaching West Virginia’s youth the conservative values and ethics in leadership that will move West Virginia ahead socially and economically by sponsoring a young lady from Wood County to attend. Transportation to and from camp is the reponsibility of the camper.

Girls interested must submit a 1-page, double-spaced, typed essay stating why they want to attend Camp Lincoln. Two letters of recommendation, an application & health form* must accompany the essay. Submit to: Deidre' Lake, 1065 Winding Road, Parkersburg, WV 26104 by June 10th.

May 16th Meeting

The WCRW met at the Parkersburg & Wood Co. Library Summer Auditorium. The proposed by-law changes were approved as well as the 2009 Literacy Project. Phyllis Morris will head the Literacy Project again this year. The information from Camp Lincoln was received and a letter will go out to all Wood Co. High Schools to solicit a young lady to sponsor. Those present signed up to volunteer at our upcoming Blood Drive on Thursday, June 11th at the Red Cross Center on Dudley Avenue from Noon-6:00 p.m. More volunteers are needed for the 1-hour shifts, please email or call Deidre. The President shared a Program about Armed Forces Day to celebrate the day which included pictures of old posters and curent photos of each branch of the military. Our joint picnic with the WCREC will be on Saturday, June 27th at the City Park. The Mission of Mercy volunteer project will be on Fri/Sat July 31/August 1 at WVU-P. Our next meeting will be Saturday, August 8th from 10:00 a.m.-Noon at the Parkersburg & Wood Co. Library Summers Auditorium. Fresh fruit will be served.

What a wonderful day to be a Republican Woman! We gathered from all over the GREAT State of West Virginia for the WVFRW Spring Board in beautiful Buckhannon, W.Va. hosted by Central RW. We shared ideas, networked, and took care of business. The Nominating Committee for the 2010-11 Officers was selected: Nancy Bradley (Putnam Co. RW), Patty Adams (Central RW) & Deidre' Lake (WCRW). The Election Committee for the WVFRW Beinnial Convention: Peggy Ahlborn (WCRW), LeVera Gillum (Central RW) & Hazel Lilly (Putnam Co. RW). Delegates/Alternates to NFRW Biennial Convention on September 10-13 in Orlando, FL were selected. Our very own Phyllis Morris, NFRW Literacy Committee Member, shared information about the Mamie Eisenhower Literacy Project. Inspirational music was provided by Pam Powers Moore. Senator Donna Boley was our guest speaker. She shared information regarding the latest session and when they would return. We were surprised by a visit from Delegate Bill Hamilton (R-Upshur) who joined us for lunch and brought greetings. Lunch was delicious & the deocrations lovely. We always have such a good time at these events and are excited to share that the WCRW will host the WVFRW Biennial Convention on October 2&3, 2009. "Taxed Enough Already" was the theme on Wednesday, April 15th as 400+ people gathered in downtown Parkersburg despite inclimate weather to express unity in their thoughts regarding the current Administration's excessive spending and taxation. Many WCRW were present at this non-partisan event. It was wonderful to see so many come together regardless of age, gender or political party to send a message to Washington, D.C. Let's pray they get it!

Ten members of the WCRW met for a regular meeting on Saturday, March 28th at the Parkersburg & Wood County Library. Among the agenda items, proposed changes to the current By-laws were presented. These changes will be voted on at our next regular meeting on May 16th. Contact Deidre' if you were absent and would like a copy. Our 2009 Community Projects: Blood Drive (June 11th) & Mission of Mercy (July 31/Aug. 1st) were discussed in great detail (see entries below for this information). The President encouraged those present to participate in the "Red-envelope" Project and provided each with the criteria. Registration forms for the WVFRW Spring Board on Saturday, April 25th in Buchannon were passed out. The $25 registration fee is due by April 10th. Contact Deidre' if you need one. The members voted to continue to support the scholarship/internship opportunitites provided by the National Fedeteration of Republican Women (see entry below). The WCRW are pleased and proud to share the following information regarding 2 scholarship opportunites provided by the National Federation of Republican Women.

BETTY RENDEL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established in September of 1995 in honor of NFRW Past President Betty Rendel's extraordinary leadership skills and dedication to the Republican Party in her home state of Indiana, as well as at the national level.

The 3 annual scholarships of $1,000 each are designed for undergraduate students who are majoring in political science, government or economics. The recipients are chosen from applicants from across the nation. The scholarships are given to students who have successfully completed at least 2 years of college coursework.

NATIONAL PATHFINDER SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 1985 in honor of First Lady Nancy Reagan, the 3 annual scholarships of $2,500 each are available to provide financial assistance and support to young students seeking undergraduate or postgraduate degrees. College sophomores, juniors, and seniors, and students enrolled in a Masters Program are eligible. Recent high school graduates and first year college students are not eligible to apply for this scholarship.

Summer will be here before you know it, so please mark your calendar for Thursday, June 11, 2009 for the WCRW Blood Drive! It will be from Noon-6:00 p.m. at the Keystone Donor Center located on Dudley Avenue, Parkersburg. ALL members are needed to donate a pint of blood as well as any family and friends that we can share this opportunity with. Our goal for the day is 40 pints. If you attend a church that you could post a flyer about this worthy event, please let Deidre' know. We will need 2 members to work as volunteers for each of the 6, 1-hour shifts. What a wonderful day it was at the State Capitol in Charleston on Monday, February 16, 2009! Our Host, Senator Donna Boley and her Secretary, Carolyn, always do such a lovely job at organizing this annual event. With Republican Women from all over West Virginia decked out in RED, we almost filled the South Gallery of the Senate! After a group photo and being recognized in the Senate, we enjoyed a dutch-treat lunch in the renovated Cafeteria located in the Capitol basement. Many Senators: Clarke Barnes (Randolph), Jesse Guills (Greenbrier), Mike Hall (Putnam), Dave Sypolt (Preston), and House of Delegates: Tim Armstead (Kanawha), Woody Ireland (Ritchie), Carol Miller (Cabell), and Kelli Sobonya (Cabell) shared thoughts and ideas with us in the Govenor's Conference Room after lunch. Those interested were able to tour the Govenor's Mansion. We were happy to see the final renovations and enjoy the hospitality of the First Lady, Gayle Manchin. She took the time to meet everyone personally and gave each a lapel pin of the Govenor's Mansion. WCRW had 3 members attending. MISSION OF MERCY

The WCRW are happy to announce that one of our Community Projects for this year is for ALL members & Associate members to be volunteers for the first local "Mission Of Mercy." This is a free clinic that provides dental services to persons 18 & older who could not otherwise afford dental care. The goal is to serve 1,200 patients over two days! The clinic will be Friday, July 31 and Saturday, August 1 at WVU-P from 6:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. both days. Volunteers are needed to assist with set up, registration, hospitality, to help patients through the process, and tearing down. 3 shifts are offered: 6 a.m. - Noon, Noon -6 p.m. or 6 a.m.-6 p.m. each day. The President debuted the "You've been recommended" brochure and gave information regarding the possible implimentation of legislation of Katie's Law in WV.
